"Module 3"

Readings-
Adolescent and Digital Literacies: Learning Alongside Our Students by Sarah Kajder: Read Adolescent Research Brief (pp. ix-xix) and chapter 1-4

Discussion- Participate in the Voice Thread Discussion as you read. Here are the things I want you to think about or do as you read these chapters. Link to VoiceThread http://voicethread.com/share/1345245/

1.Share  one big thought that resonates with you from the brief. It may be something you disagree with or don't understand. It may be that "aha" moment. Yes you can share more than one idea or thought!
 2. Spend some time talking with your students about their digital lives. Find out what they do online. Ask them about their use of Facebook, You Tube, Wikipedia, My Space, and others. Find out how they are using their phones.
3. Are you the 21st Century English Teacher? Who are you more like Liz, Brice, or Ed?
What new meaning did you make from both chapters?

Action:
Write two   reflective blog posts.

Read and make at least one comment to each person's post in your group.

Continue to read and follow at least three other bloggers outside our class.

Pause and Ponder due Midnight September 27th. Please email it to me as an attachment to mailto:wcgaskins.59@gmail.com.
1. What are the key points in your reading? (book, maybe blog posts)

Last Week of Module 2

September 27 marks the end of module 2 and your module 2 pause and ponder is due midnight on the 27th. By midnight on the 27th you should have six blog post completed since our last face to face class meeting. Some of the tech skill I am looking for in blog posts are the use of Ipadio or another form of a podcast, embedding video, hyperlinking, and reflecting as a learner.  You should be finished reading the book by Troy Hicks. Also, you should be very comfortable in using You Tube to find videos for learning how to use digital tools we have learned about and other digital tools.

In the Pause and Ponder, use these questions with your reflection. In order to get full credit, you must answer the questions below:

1. What are the key points in your reading? (Include key points in the Troy Hicks book and let me know what blogs you have been following in your reader. May share one or two key points from a particular writer)
2. Based on your experience as an educator, how can you apply content from this reading to your classroom and teaching?
3. What new insight did you gain from all that you have learned?
4. How has class discussion (VoiceThread) influenced your thinking? (and may a comment that was given on your blog)

**** You may post your pause and ponder as a blog post. If you post as a blog post, just send me an email to check your blog. Send me the link to the blog post as well.

Pause and Ponder due Midnight September 27th. Please email it to me as an attachment to mailto:wcgaskins.59@gmail.com.

I am really enjoying the discussion on The Digital Writing Workshop! Great Job! If you have not made your contributions to the discussion, jump in!

I look forward to our face to face class on September 27. We will begin at 5:30 PM to 8:30.  I have two guest speakers lined up. Cathy Nelson and Pat Hensley . Pat is a retired special education teacher and is the author of the blog Successful Teaching. Pat also teaches education courses at Furman University and has be a great friend over the last three years. We have never met face to face but I have learned so much from as another learning in Professional Learning Network (PLN).  Her blog gets over 100 hits a day.  You will enjoy learning from her.

Cathy Nelson is the author of Techno Tuesday. Cathy use to be a media specialist in your district, but now works in school district in the upstate. I have met Cathy once and she has a lot to offer. I have learned so much from Cathy from her blog. I am happy to have her as part of my PLN.

I have asked Cathy and Pat to talk about their blog and their PLN.

Then the remainder of class we will be involved in a learning lab. We will do group work and each group will create a wiki site about a new digital tool.  I can't wait.

Have a great week!

Communities Trump Content

Jeff Utecht presents "Communities Trump Content." This is one of the best 16 minutes of listening to Jeff. The highlights of the talk was Jeff discussing the four generations of technology use- digital immigrants, digital natives, the web generations, and the mobile generation. He makes reiterates a big point- learning is about making connections and making connections with a community. The new internet allows that to happen, but the big question "what will happen to public education if we don't make this shift?" I do believe those kids who live a connected life are learning more outside of school than inside our schools. It is a shame!!!!

Thanks Jeff for sharing this with us! Bill

Module 2 Hyperlinking Text

Greetings Everyone,

I am really enjoying the video that you are sharing. I have seen and bookmarked many that I want to refer back to. You are doing great!  If you have not done yours yet, just make sure the video blog reflection is at least one of the three.

It is imperative that you keep up with the dates for writing blog posts. See Module 2 dates. Participation is important and participation include reading blog using your Google Reader and leaving comments to the people in your group. I will be reviewing blogs to look at your comments over the next week. I know how busy you are but I do remind you that this is a graduate course.

Below is a video on how to hypertext  or link to another site. In the above paragraph "Module 2"
is hyperlinked text. You should give it a try in one or both of your remaining blog posts for Module 2.

I look forward to Monday, September 27. I have a great class planned.

You are all doing so well. If you are behind, you still have time.
